Derived from the Brahmanda Purana, the Lalitha Sahasranama is a collection of 1,000 powerful, attributes-based names of the Supreme Goddess, originally composed by the eight Vag Devatas (goddesses of speech) under her explicit command. Goddess Lalitha represents the combined creative, protective, and transformative energies of the entire universe.
When this puja is performed, the vibrational frequencies of the 1,000 names thoroughly cleanse the surrounding atmosphere and the inner consciousness of the devotees. The ritual can be conducted on any day but holds immense planetary and spiritual significance when performed on Fridays, Full Moon days (Purnima), or during Navratri. 1. Shuddhi & Altar Setup: The prayer space is meticulously cleaned and purified. A wooden platform (Chowki) is set up and draped with a fresh red silk cloth. An image or idol of Maa Lalitha Tripura Sundari or a sacred Sri Yantra is installed at the center.
2. Ganpati Puja & Deepa Prajvalan: The ritual opens by lighting a ghee or sesame oil lamp to establish positive energy. Initial prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha to ensure the ceremony proceeds smoothly without any obstacles.
3. Vishesh Sankalp: The host holds a little water, fresh red flowers, and raw rice grains in their right hand. The priests recite your name, birth details, and family lineage (Gotra) while you mentally state your specific intentions (e.g., prosperity, healing, or success).
4. Shodashopachara Worship: The deity or Sri Yantra is formally worshipped with 16 traditional offerings, including vermilion (Kumkum), loose flowers, aromatic incense (Dhoop), and natural sandalwood paste.
5. Kumkumarchana & Sahasranama Path: The core of the ritual. While the priests cleanly chant the 1,000 names of Lalitha Sahasranama, fresh red vermilion (Kumkum) or rose petals are continuously offered at the feet of the Goddess or onto the vertices of the Sri Yantra.
6. The Shanti Yagna (Optional Havan): If a fire ceremony is requested, a sacred fire is kindled. Offerings of pure cow ghee, lotus seeds, and fragrant herbs are offered into the fire following key mantras from the text to seal the energetic atmosphere.
7. Naivedya Bhog & Aarti: The Goddess is offered freshly made sweet rice pudding (Kheer) or traditional milk sweets. The family then stands for the grand Maha Mangala Aarti using a camphor lamp.
8. Prasad Distribution: The energized Kumkum from the archana is collected to be applied as a daily protective mark (Tilak) on the forehead, and the blessed food is shared.
