Parthiv Puja
Parthiv Puja (also known as Parthiv Shivling Puja) is a highly revered Hindu ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva. It involves hand-crafting a temporary Shivling from clean, natural clay or earth (Parthiv means "made of earth"), worshipping it with dedicated Vedic rituals, and later immersing it in water.
Rooted deeply in the Shiva Purana, Parthiv Puja holds a unique position in Hindu iconography and worship. Since Lord Shiva is closely connected to nature and the earth element, a clay representation is considered immensely sacred.
Unlike permanent stone structures in temples, a Parthiv Shivling is ephemeral, symbolizing humility, the impermanence of life, and eventual dissolution back into nature. In scriptural mythology, great figures like Lord Rama performed this ritual at Rameshwaram to free himself from karmic burdens, and Lord Shani performed it to attain spiritual power. It is most widely practiced during the holy month of Shravan, on Mondays, or during Maha Shivratri.

A. Preparation & Construction (Parthiva Nirman)
Gather pure mud or clay from clean areas like a riverbank.
Mix it with holy water (Ganga jal), and optionally small amounts of milk, ghee, or sacred ash (bhasma).
Hand-mold the mixture into a neat Shivling. Traditionally, its height should not exceed the size of your thumb to keep its energy contained and manageable at home.
Place it centrally on a clean platter decorated with flowers.
B. Invocation (Sankalp & Pran Pratishtha)
Sit facing North or East.
Take a Sankalp (a formal vow stating your name, lineage/gotra, and the specific intent of your prayer).
Chant mantras (such as "Om Namah Shivaya") to invoke the divine presence of Mahadev into the earthen form.
C. Ritual Bathing (Rudra Abhishek)
Bathe the Shivling continuously with sacred liquids while chanting Vedic hymns.
Perform the Panchamrit Abhishek by gently pouring milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar water in sequence.
Cleanse it with pure water or Ganga jal afterward.
D. Offerings & Aarti
Decorate the Shivling with Tripundra (three horizontal lines) using sandalwood paste or Bhasma.
Offer Bilva (Bel) leaves, white flowers, fruits, and sweets.
Wave an incense stick and a camphor lamp while performing the final Aarti.
E. Immersion (Visarjan)
Because the form is temporary, the energy must be released gracefully.
Before sunset, respectfully immerse the clay Shivling into a natural water body (river, lake, or sea). If no water body is nearby, dissolve it completely in a clean bucket of water at home and pour it into the soil under a sacred tree.
